Back in May our family took our first family vacation. We didn’t want to fly anywhere and we didn’t want to drive far. San Antonio is about a 5 hour drive from Tyler, so it was the perfect place for us to go. We also wanted to go somewhere we could stay on a budget, but still have a good time. And of course we wanted everything to be family friendly.
We stayed at The Courtyard Marriot San Antonio/SeaWorld Westover Hills…….the “official” hotel of SeaWorld. It was pretty stinkin’ close to Sea World which was amazing. I can’t say enough good things about the hotel. It was perfect for our family. We had two queen beds in the main room and a pull-out sofa in the living room. It was nice to have the extra space….and extra TV. The price of the room was just right too!
One of the perks to being so close to Sea World was the free shuttle to and from Sea World. Parking is $20, so it was nice to avoid that parking fee, and it was super nice to be dropped off right at the entrance of Sea World!! Not only do they shuttle back and forth to Sea World, but will also take you anywhere within a 5 mile radius of the hotel. We just had to call the lobby and tell them when and where we wanted to go and a shuttle would pick us up at the front of the hotel!
Speaking of Sea World……don’t ever pay full price for Sea World tickets. There are always deals to be had. We got a great deal on Groupon, but I know they also do discounts for military and teacher. We have also gotten deals through our hotel concierge before. So look around for a deal before you pay full price for tickets.
On the afternoons we didn’t have plans, we spent some time at the hotel pool. Towels are provided and it’s the perfect place for little kids. They had a beach entry and little splash pad area that my boys loved.
We ate most of our meals while we were out and about, but they do have a really great café with reasonable prices open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The location was great. We were obviously super close to Sea World, but we were super close to a ton of restaurants. We did quite a few activities closer to downtown including The San Antonio Zoo, The Doseum, The Riverwalk & The Alamo, but driving into town wasn’t bad. It only took us about 20-25 minutes to get to Downtown. And let’s face it…..sometimes with Tyler traffic on Broadway, it can take 20 minutes to get from the mall down South to the Loop.
A few other great deals to be had in San Antonio include free admission to The Doseum if you have a premium membership at The Discovery Science Place here in Tyler. You can also get 50% off tickets to the Zoo with a Caldwell Membership card as well.
San Antonio was the perfect first vacation for our little family. I highly recommend a family trip there!
