What really matters? Does it matter where we work, or if we work outside of the home? Does it matter where our kids go to school? Does it matter who wins the presidential election? Does it matter how well we decorate for the holidays, or if we even decorate at all? Does anything we do in this life really matter, since we will all, one day, die and take nothing with us?
Before we get distracted with all of the things that we have to do as mothers, and before we get discouraged by problems that arise in life, let’s stop and take a look at what really matters.
This is what I have found REALLY matters to me and my family….The Bible.
Before the world began, God had a great plan. God created the whole world in six days and He saw that it was “very good”. He made the first man and woman and gave them everything that they needed and many things to enjoy. God also gave the man and woman free will. Through this first man and woman, sin entered the world and ALL of us sin and fall short of the glory of God, failing to perfectly obey God’s plan.
God began to tell his plan little by little to the first fathers. He picked a man named Abraham and made three promises to him: 1. Abraham would be the father of a great nation. 2. Abraham’s family would be given a special land. 3. All men would be blessed through Abraham’s seed. Abraham did not see all of these blessings fulfilled, but over hundreds of years, his family DID become a great nation and they were given their promised land by God, fulfilling His first two promises.
It took another thousand years or so for God’s third promise to be fulfilled. It was fulfilled when Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, the Word who was with God at the beginning and through whom all things were made, left Heaven and came to earth. He came to live as both God and man on the earth and die a cruel death on the cross for the sins of ALL men. Through this perfect sacrifice, ALL men are blessed and have the opportunity to one day be in Heaven with the LORD. We can be saved by grace and through faith. Faith working through love in obedience to God.
God has given his Word to us in the Bible, so we can know His great plan. We can see that everything in our Bibles, from the very first verse points to Jesus, and tells us about His will for our lives.
What I feel REALLY matters in life is God’s Word and what we do with it. Are we studying it? Living it? Teaching our children and others about it?
In our family, we’ve chosen to filter what matters, through our faith. There are so many things happening in our world, in our nation and even right here close to home that have to be put through a filter and discussed among our families. And we have to decide what really matters!
