Ahhh March. That time of year when the weather is unpredictable; and Spring Fever is in full swing! Spring break is this month and summer is just around the corner.

As you are looking for fun for your family this month, look to East Texas Moms Blog for help, because our archives are full of posts relating to many topics that can be found with a quick search. 

There is always something going on in East Texas and we want to keep you in the know! Events in this guide are organized by date as well as category to help you find what you are interested in quickly. If you know of any fun family activities, please take a minute to add it to our Community Events Calendar here or let us know in the comments. We will update this guide with new additions as we receive them. March 1:  Harriet Tubman | 9:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. W.M. Turner Auditorium, Nacogdoches Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the University Series observes Black History Month with two performances of “Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad,” presented by Virginia Repertory Theatre, on Thursday, Feb. 1. This stirring drama with music is a classic tribute to the great American who freed herself and hundreds of her people from the bonds of slavery. Her courage helped to change the world. Share her adventurous life with your students in this factual and deeply moving musical history lesson. The play targets children in second through eighth grade. Performances are at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus. March 1:  Foster and Adoption Information Meeting | 6 – 8 p.m. The Bair Foundation, Tyler Answer the Call and Become a Foster Parent. In the United States there are over 400,000 children and teens in the foster care system. The Bair Foundation offers the following opportunities to serve: Full Time Foster Parenting, Part-Time (Respite) Foster Parenting, Foster-to-Adopt, Medically Needy Foster Care, To find out more information join us at one of our upcoming orientations. They are held the first Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm. March 1-3:  Just Between Friends | East Texas State Fairgrounds Building E, Tyler, Texas **Get your free passes for the event online! Limited amount of Free Admission Passes online!**  Come Join us for our twice a year HUGE Children’s and Maternity Sale Event! You can find just about anything to raise a child with from infant to Juniors. We all know that raising children is not cheap, and we want the best! You can have the best for an incredible price too! This is a great place to shop and sell your items too! 
Thursday, March 1st, will be pre sale and Prime time shopping. Get your FREE Pass below on eventbrite! Limited tickets for early shopping!! Thursday is our only day for admission. Admission charge is your choice of coupon (Eventbrite) or 5 canned goods items, or $5.00! Free admission all other days. Sale is March 1st-3rd! Pre sale starts on March 1st, in the morning for presale shopping for Volunteers/Consignors, followed by pre sale shopping for First Time Parents/Grandparents, Teachers and Military. We will open to the General Public at 5pm, or get in early with tickets from Eventbrite! Friday is open free admission from 10am – 7pm. Saturday morning will be free admission starting at 10am-1pm. You don’t want to miss this event, as this is sure to be our biggest sale!

March 1-4: First Monday Trade Days | “Sun-Up Til Sundown, Rain or Shine” – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas is the oldest, largest, continually operating flea market in the United States.  This popular flea market is open one weekend a month, attracts upwards of 100,000 shoppers, and provides spaces for 6,000 vendors located on hundreds of acres. It has become known by shoppers from all across Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma as THE place to buy home decor, furnishings, antiques, clothing, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and collectibles. And it is a favorite of vendors, dealers, craftsmen and artists alike as the perfect venue to market their wares.

March 2-3:  Jefferson Flea Market | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Located at 213 W. Broadway Street, Jefferson, Texas 75657.  The Jefferson Flea Market is evolving into one of the better Flea Markets in East Texas. Since opening over a year ago, the Jefferson Flea Market is growing, with an increase in both the number of visitors and vendors. Open year round on Friday and Saturday the First and Third weekend of every month and occasionally  on Sunday when there is a holiday or special events on the following Monday. 

March 3:  Fresh 15 | 7:30 – 10 a.m. Tyler, Texas Save the date for YEAR 5!! Join us for the biggest party on the pavement – 15k, 5k and kids 1k!! Registration is now open at BGCracing.com

March 3: First Saturday Sale at Flamingos to benefit ETCrisis Center | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tyler, Texas Flamingos Upscale Resale generates revenue that helps support the emergency shelter of the East Texas Crisis Center. The store provides clothing and shoes for women who arrive at our shelter with no other clothing than what they are wearing, for women going on job interviews and for clients going to court. Sales to the public are ancillary funding source for East Texas Crisis Center programs. Resale store operations at Flamingos in the heart of Tyler provides women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, furniture, household goods and home décor. March 3:  Texas Coffee Festival | 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Downtown Tyler, Texas Come by to Taste and Smell of Various Types of Gourmet Coffee and the Great Sound of Jazz Music will fill Downtown Tyler Texas on The Square during the Second Texas Coffee Festival 2018

March 6:  Foster Care Orientation Meeting | 6 p.m. Arrow Child & Family Ministries1517 W Southwest Loop 323, Tyler, Texas  Please join us for the next information meeting in your area to get some basic information about fostering or adopting through Arrow. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about the need for more Christian foster families, what it takes to become a foster parent, and have all your questions answered. This meeting also serves as our orientation for those who have decided to begin the process of becoming foster parents. Here’s a list of topics we’ll be covering: The history of our ministry, The concept of being Christ’s ambassador, The story of Esther (orphan to queen), The history of foster care, The current child welfare system, How children come into foster care, The trauma experienced by foster children, The steps needed to pursue fostering. You can make an eternal difference in the life of a local child in need. March 6:  Mowtown the Musical | 7:30 p.m. UT Tyler Cowan Center It began as one man’s story… became everyone’s music… and is now a Broadway musical. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is the true American Dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives, and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit MOTOWN THE MUSICAL!

March 7:  Super Scientific Circus | 9:30 a.m. & 12:30 p.m. W.M. Turner Auditorium, Nacogdoches Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the University Series brings classroom favorite Super Scientific Circus back to the SFA campus for two performances on Wednesday, March 7. Starring Mr. Fish and Trent the Mime, Super Scientific Circus proves that science can be fun and funny. Alternately assisted and foiled by the comedic antics of Trent the Mime, Mr. Fish uses amazing circus skills involving boomerangs, bubbles, beach balls, bull whips and magic to introduce the principles of friction, inertia, centripetal force, aerodynamics, sonic booms, air pressure and ultraviolet light. The show is for all ages, kindergarten through twelfth grade. Performances are at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus. Please note that this program is for adults only and each class size is limited to 35. March 9:  Alice in Wonderland | 7:30 p.m. UT Tyler Cowan Center Finally, an Alice for our time! It’s a new take on a favorite classic. This all-new production finds a precocious girl, Alice, falling into a fantastic world of extravagant characters where little makes sense. To find her way, Alice charts a topsy-turvy course where every turn means a new adventure. March 10:  Hit The Bricks | 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Downtown Tyler, Texas The second Saturday of every month, Downtown is the place to be! Downtown businesses will host special events on and off the square for all to enjoy. PARKING IS FREE in the parking garage and on the square! Also, ride the FREE hop on/hop off shuttle! FAMILY FRIENDLY.  March 10 will be Hit the Bricks FOOD TRUCK RALLY! Bring your picnic blankets and families to the Downtown Square for lunch and snacks from a food truck!

March 12:  Gamesters’ Paradise | 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. Longview Public Library As part of Spring Break @ LPL, Gamesters’ Paradise will be joining us at the Library! This is dear to my heart because this all started due to my own family member being diagnosed with cancer! Please help us raise money! Our race will start @ 9am both 5k and 1 mile. Register by the end of February to have your shirt by race day and to receive our St Patrick’s Day swag bag!

March 22-24:  Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show | Jacksonville, Texas Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show includes Horticulture, Goats, Lambs, Poultry, Dairy Cattle, Rabbits, Swine, Shop projects, Horses, Pen of Commercial Heifers, and Beef.

March 22:  Playhouses on the Plaza | 6 – 9 p.m. Downtown Tyler, Texas Dinner and live auction of custom built playhouses benefitting Habitat for Humanity of Smith County.

March 23-24: Liberty Jubilee | Liberty, Texas  Often described as one of the best small town festivals in the State of Texas, the Liberty Jubilee is a family style festival held around the historic downtown area usually on the fourth weekend of March each year. The festival dates back to 1986 when it was designed as part of the Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration.   The original event, however, was such a success that the City of Liberty decided to continue holding it each year.  The festival opens at noon on Friday with various food vendors, arts and crafts vendors and the Liberty Municipal Library’s book and bake sale.  That evening there is a street dance.  A popular Barbecue Cook-off competition is held each year with teams setting up on Friday afternoon and judging held on Saturday.  There is literally something for everyone in the family to see or do throughout the two day event.  There is a stage with live entertainment, children’s games and rides, arts and crafts and, of course, great food. 

March 24:  Azalea 10K/5K | 9 a.m. Bergfeld Park, Tyler, Texas Come our for the new and improved Tyler Azalea 10k! This race has been taken over by local runners and we are looking forward to the best year yet! Proceeds benefit local charity, The Children’s Village.

March 24:  Azalea Trails Art Show | 12 – 4 p.m. Tyler, Texas Join us during the Azalea Trails season as we host local artist John Randall York! The Smith County Historical Society will be hosting John upstairs in our Payne Auditorium. 
We are so excited to see the wonderful showcase John will have available to the public! The Society is working to provide supplemental histories of John’s subjects and for the works he will have available for sale. Please join us for a viewing of his artwork and learn the history of multiple local landmarks! If you would like more information please feel free to contact the Smith County Historical Society.

March 30-31:  Artisans & Flower Market | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tyler, Texas The Rose City Artisans & Flower Market will be held at the Goodman LeGrand Museum. Stop by and visit the artisans and vendors will be selling a wide variety from fine art, garden decor, hand-made items, food, herbs, produce, wine and much more. There will also be 2 mini Easter egg hunts on Friday, March 30 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Azalea Belles and Easter Bunny will be in attendance for photo opportunities. Admission to the event is free.

March 31:  Easter 5K Trail Run and Ruck Race | 8 a.m. Longview, Texas Join us for our 5th annual 5k trail race and ruck (backpack) run. Race on semi-improved trails through scenic Lear Park in Longview, with or without a ruck! Male ruck racers will wear a 30 lb. backpack and female ruck racers will wear a 20 lb. pack for the entire 5k. All racers can also choose to run the 5K with no pack, as a normal 5K trail run. Walkers and off-road strollers are welcome!

March 31:  WOJO 5K Rabbit Run | 8 a.m. Jefferson, Texas The Women of Jefferson Organization (WOJO) will be hosting their annual 5K Scholarship Rabbit Run / Walk in beautiful historic Jefferson, Texas on Saturday, March 31st, 2018. 
Thanks to Norbord, we will be awarding a CASH PRIZE for the top finishing man and woman in the 5K race. Event also features children’s race and Easter Egg Hunt.  If you are interested in sponsoring this wonderful fundraiser, please contact us at [email protected]
WOJO awards scholarships to High School Seniors and to adults for ongoing or higher education or returning to school for special training. We were able to award $5,500.00 in scholarships in 2017.

Babygarten Story Time – Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
Children ages 0-2. Infant story time! We welcome parents to come with their babies and listen to songs, nursery rhymes, and stories geared toward their age. The children may not yet be of speaking or walking age, but physical interaction is extremely important in the early stages of child development. The infant story time also allows for parents to start off their child’s habits right by coming to the Library each week. Due to young attention spans, this story time will last about 15 minutes.

Tutoring Tuesdays – Tuesday from 3 – 5 p.m.
If your child, 5-13 years old, is struggling with their homework or understanding what they are doing in class, simply register them for Tutoring Tuesdays, and our qualified librarians will help!
Space is limited, so children must pre-register at the Children’s Desk prior to the tutoring session.
Due to time constraints, we will only be able to assist up to 10 students each Tuesday.
Please bring your child’s homework, along with any detailed instructions from their teacher(s).

Early Learning Journeys Story Time – Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Suggested for children ages 3-5. Young children will enjoy singing along and interacting with Library staff while building their educational foundation! Story time opens with a time of singing beloved childhood songs and nursery rhymes, followed by a newly-published book being read aloud. Children will then enjoy activities and crafts geared towards helping them to imagine, create, and grow! This story time lasts about 30 minutes.

Discovery Kids Story Time – Wednesday at 4 p.m.
After a long day at school, Discovery Kids is a time for children of all ages at the Broughton Recreation Center to gather around and hear a newly-published, popular chapter book read aloud while enjoying a small after-school snack. Afterward, time is set aside for the children to share their various thoughts and ideas regarding the book. The time frame for the this story time is about 40 minutes.

LEGOs @ The Library – Saturday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
A children’s book is read aloud, then children build their creations with a new theme each time while a movie is being played. Children of all ages are welcome to build! Larger Duplo bricks are provided for toddlers. At the end of each session, everyone’s creations are put in the Children’s Department’s display case until the next LEGOs @ the Library. Feel free to bring your friends and family by to show them what you built! This come-and-go event requires no registration, and you don’t even have to bring your own bricks. We have plenty to share, so just show up in the Children’s Department on Saturday morning!

Playing to Grow – Monday 5-6 p.m. Ages Birth to 3 years.  Join Mrs. Pam for this time to play and discover how play helps with learning and reading readiness. Children birth to age 3 with their parent (s).

Playing to Grow – Tuesday 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Ages Birth to 3 years.  Join Mrs. Pam for this time to play and discover how play helps with learning and reading readiness. Children birth to age 3 with their parent (s).

After School Programs – Tuesday 4 – 4:30 p.m. Two programs for children.  One program is for those children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.  The other program is for children in Middle and High School (6th grade and up). Both programs have different activities weekly. Parents must remain on premises or make arrangements for their child’s supervision.  When the programs are over, an adult must be available to pick up the child; or, if there is a problem in the program, an adult must be available to help address the issue.

Toddler Story Time – Wednesday 10:15 – 10:45 a.m. Ages 18 months to 3 years.

Preschool Story Time – Wednesday 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.

Story Time – Wednesday 10 a.m. Ages: 12 years and younger. Introduce your child to the richness of literature through stories, songs, crafts and activities. Story time helps instill a lifelong love of reading, and it is informative and engaging for parents as well.
Reading Buddies – Wednesday 4 – 5 p.m. Children in grades 1-12. Volunteers and library staff are available to help your children practice their reading aloud skills. Buddies sit with the parent/caregiver and the child to help the child with pronunciation and comprehension. 

STEAM 4 Kids: Lights! Camera! Action! – Thursday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. STEAM 4 Kids will be devoted to the art of filmmaking. We will investigate types of cameras, types of videos, enhancing videos through lighting and sound, and how to edit and share our videos. Each program will have a different lesson so children can participate as they are able. Registration: Free. Please register by the day before the event.

Read Aloud Crowd – Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. For children ages 3 to 6.
