An East Texas Mom’s Guide to the Month of April

April is showering us with fun activities and beautiful weather. Make time this month to get out and play at one of East Texas’ many great parks.

There is always something going on in East Texas and we want to keep you in the know! Events in this guide are organized by date as well as category to help you find what you are interested in quickly. If you know of any fun family activities, please take a minute to add it to our Community Events Calendar here or let us know in the comments. We will update this guide with new additions as we receive them. April 1: First Monday Trade Days | “Sun-Up Til Sundown, Rain or Shine” – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas is the oldest, largest, continually operating flea market in the United States.  This popular flea market is open one weekend a month, attracts upwards of 100,000 shoppers, and provides spaces for 6,000 vendors located on hundreds of acres. It has become known by shoppers from all across Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma as THE place to buy home decor, furnishings, antiques, clothing, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and collectibles. And it is a favorite of vendors, dealers, craftsmen and artists alike as the perfect venue to market their wares.

April 3:  Foster Care Orientation Meeting | 6 p.m. Arrow Child & Family Ministries1517 W Southwest Loop 323, Tyler, Texas  Please join us for the next information meeting in your area to get some basic information about fostering or adopting through Arrow. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about the need for more Christian foster families, what it takes to become a foster parent, and have all your questions answered. This meeting also serves as our orientation for those who have decided to begin the process of becoming foster parents. Here’s a list of topics we’ll be covering: The history of our ministry, The concept of being Christ’s ambassador, The story of Esther (orphan to queen), The history of foster care, The current child welfare system, How children come into foster care, The trauma experienced by foster children, The steps needed to pursue fostering. You can make an eternal difference in the life of a local child in need. Join us for one of the meetings in Tyler the first Tuesday of every month.

Aprl 5:  Foster and Adoption Information Meeting | 6 – 8 p.m. The Bair Foundation, Tyler Answer the Call and Become a Foster Parent. In the United States there are over 400,000 children and teens in the foster care system. The Bair Foundation offers the following opportunities to serve: Full Time Foster Parenting, Part-Time (Respite) Foster Parenting, Foster-to-Adopt, Medically Needy Foster Care, To find out more information join us at one of our upcoming orientations. They are held the first Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm. We are located 5935 Old Bullard Rd. Ste. 100 Tyler, TX 75703. Prayerfully consider this mission field by becoming a champion for a hurting child or teen.

April 3:  Taste of Tyler | 6 – 8 p.m. Harvey Convention Center, Tyler The East Texas Restaurant Association has partnered with the Junior League of Tyler to bring you Taste of Tyler 2018! Join us for a fun evening at Harvey Hall where local restaurants come together to highlight their menus and strengths. The evening is accompanied by local culinary students working at the event and competing in a competition among themselves. All proceeds are returned directly to area high schools in the form of culinary scholarships to strengthen the local culinary industry by investing in its students’ futures. Be sure to purchase your tickets now, it’s sure to be a great time!

April 6-7:  Jefferson Flea Market | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Located at 213 W. Broadway Street, Jefferson, Texas 75657.  The Jefferson Flea Market is evolving into one of the better Flea Markets in East Texas. Since opening over a year ago, the Jefferson Flea Market is growing, with an increase in both the number of visitors and vendors. Open year round on Friday and Saturday the First and Third weekend of every month and occasionally  on Sunday when there is a holiday or special events on the following Monday. 

April 7:  Opening Day at Rose City Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Tyler, Texas We are Tyler’s truly local farmers market. Since our humble beginnings, we have been a producer’s only market so you can rest assured everything on our tables was produced by the person selling it.  A family and dog friendly community gathering place, Rose City Farmers Market is THE place to be! Produce, herbs, wood oven breads, pastries, granola, jams, pickles, locally roasted coffee, cheese, artisans, and live music.

April 7:  Tyler Run for Autism | 8 a.m. – noon Pollard UMC, Tyler The 2018 Tyler Run for Autism will be presenting a 10k, 5k and 1 mile fun run to Tyler, Texas for its 7th year. Participants will receive awesome spinner finisher’s medals, t-shirt, swag and heartfelt gratitude for pouring into the lives of those affected by Autism.  The Tyler Run for Autism began in 2012 with the purpose of raising funds to provide much needed Applied Behavior analysis (ABA) therapy to children on the Autism spectrum in our very own Treatment and Learning Center for children with Autism here in Tyler. 100% of the funds raised will go towards the payment of therapy.  Register online.

April 7:  Home Run 5K – 10 K | 8:15 a.m. – noon Lindale, Texas Home Run 5k/10k Registration is NOW OPEN! What better way to show the love of Jesus than to help build a home for a deserving family in our community! Sign up online.

Don’t feel like getting out that early. Not really a “runner”.  You can sign up to be a “virtual” runner – get all the “feels” for helping and yet none of the sweat or getting up early on a Saturday! 

April 7: First Saturday Sale at Flamingos to benefit ETCrisis Center | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tyler, Texas Flamingos Upscale Resale generates revenue that helps support the emergency shelter of the East Texas Crisis Center. The store provides clothing and shoes for women who arrive at our shelter with no other clothing than what they are wearing, for women going on job interviews and for clients going to court. Sales to the public are ancillary funding source for East Texas Crisis Center programs. Resale store operations at Flamingos in the heart of Tyler provides women’s clothing, shoes and accessories, furniture, household goods and home décor. April 7:  Touch A Truck | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tyler, Texas  A family friendly hands on experience with a variety of machinery/vehicles & the opportunity to meet the people who build, protect and serve our community.

April 12:  Bloom | 6 – 9 p.m. Tyler Rose Garden Please join Zeid Women’s Health Center and East Texas Moms Blog for Bloom: An Event for New and Expecting Moms in East Texas. We always welcome moms in all seasons of their motherhood journey. This event will be focused towards new and expectant moms and we would love to welcome foster and adoptive moms as well. We will have topics that will be geared towards each of you!

April 12-14:  CCC Spring Sale | Harvey Convention Center, Tyler, Texas Recycling East Texas since 2002. The CCC Sale is where over 1,400 East Texas families come together and sell their gently used, no longer needed items. Clothes, toys, books, furniture, home decor, outdoor play equipment, and bikes are just a few of the things you will find at the CCC Sale. At 50-90% of retail, it’s the best way to save money and make money as you clothe your family. Come join us.

April 14:  Red Dirt Mud Run | 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Nacogdoches, Texas Come try your skills at the Red Dirt Mud Run, brought to you by the Nacogdoches Jaycees. Prepare to get muddy. This course is a combination open pasture (on an abandoned horse track) and Wooded Trails with tons of scenery. Oh and I almost forgot THE OBSTACLES, we have over 25 of them to challenge you, including a Mud Bog, that trucks have a tough time getting thru. SCARED YET? Fear not, we have modified the routes for every level (beginner, advanced and HARDCORE). 
Don’t miss out on this RED DIRT Fun: April 14th, 2018. The entry fee is $60 on and after April 11, but you can get discounts for signing up early. Currently, prices are $40 (youth 17 and under) and $50 (adult). We will see you out on the course! REMEMBER ALL YOUTH (17 and under) MUST RUN WITH AN ADULT.  All runners get a t-shirt and a medal.  Largest Team Competition (Registration Deadline to be counted is April 7th, 8pm) – The Jaycees will make an in-kind donation to a local charity/non-profit with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd largest teams. April 14:  Safety City Day | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Longview, Texas Longview Safety City Board of Directors along with Elbowz Racing would like to invite our Supporters to our upcoming Safety City Day. The theme will be “Celebrating Community Safety.”  It will be held on Saturday, April 14th from 11 am – 3 pm at the Safety City (315 W Cotton St). Elementary age students and their families will be invited to attend this community celebration to learn more about safety. Thank you for your support of Safety City. April 21:  The Wizard of Oz | | 7:30 p.m. UT Cowan Center Join us for the National Tour of Wizard of Oz at R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center in Tyler, TX! This production of THE WIZARD OF OZ is a spectacular celebration of that classic 1939 MGM film. It’s a new, refreshed and lavish rendition of the beloved classic. April 24:  East Texas Giving Day | All Day East Texas Giving Day is an 18-hour day of giving that provides critical funding for our area nonprofits. The purpose of an area-wide Giving Day is to bring the region together on one day and as one community, raising money and awareness for East Texas nonprofits. This initiative, organized by East Texas Communities Foundation (ETCF), provides citizens an easy platform to support the mission of local nonprofits that serve our many communities. 
To participate in East Texas Giving Day, a nonprofit must be located in, or primarily serve, one of the 32 counties in East Texas Communities Foundation’s (ETCF) service area. The 32 counties served by ETCF include: Anderson, Angelina, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Delta, Franklin, Freestone, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hopkins, Houston, Lamar, Leon, Marion, Morris, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Titus, Trinity, Upshur, Van Zandt and Wood.

April 25: McDonald’s LUNCH BUNCH | 11-12 p.m.  McDonald’s  at 2034 E. SE Loop 323 Tyler, TX 75701. The April Lunch Bunch event will feature a registered dietician who will speak about McDonald’s dietician approved menu and tips for eating healthy on-the- go. April 28:  Mini Maker Faire | 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Discovery Science Place, Tyler Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where makers – tech enthusiasts, crafters, homesteaders, scientists and everyone in between – show what they are making and share what they are learning.  This will be the sixth year that Discovery Science Place has hosted Tyler Mini Maker Faire. The past five years have attracted over 1000 attendees each year and we expect this year to be the biggest yet!

Athens, Texas Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon Saturdays beginning in May, at 212 N Palestine St, Athens, Texas.

Edom, Texas Grow It Forward Farm | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturdays at VZ County Road 4609, Edom, Texas. We are a small family farm located in Edom, Texas. Our goal is to bring our community & customers fresh, locally grown produce that is chemical free.

Jefferson Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  Every Saturday in downtown Jefferson in front of the First National Bank you can get fresh produce.  For more information you can call 903-665-2421. 

Lindale Farmers Market | 8:00 a.m.  This covered open-air venue provides farmers a place to showcase their seasonal and bountiful crops and allows the citizens of Lindale a place to purchase home-grown local produce, grass-fed beef and poultry, free range eggs, and homemade arts and crafts. Homemade breads, pies, jellies, jams are also sold at the market.

The Historic Longview Farmers Market | 7:30-11:30 a.m.  The Saturday Market is located at the corner of High and Cotton Streets, on the site of the former Kelly Plow Works.  The Historic Longview Farmers Market, a project of Preservation Longview, provides local residents and visitors the opportunity to buy locally grown produce directly from the farmers as well as other local farm and specialty products–no products in the market are purchased wholesale and resold.

Mineola Farmers Market | 8 – 11 a.m.  Saturdays at The Pavilion @ 101 Front Street (west of the train depot).

Nacogdoches Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  The Market is located at the old “hitch lot” in historic downtown Nacogdoches, at 107 Pearl Street.

Rose City Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon Open Saturdays (beginning in April), at 236 South Broadway.We are Tyler’s truly local farmers market. Rusk County Farmers Market | 7 a.m. – Sold Out! Every Tuesday and Saturday. The farmers’ market is located next to the Henderson Activities Center parking lot on Fair Park and South High in Henderson, Texas.

Tyler Farmers Market | 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday beginning in May. Located at 4850 Old Bullard Rd in Tyler, Texas,  in the Broadway Square Mall parking lot on the Sears end of the mall. Established in 1983, Tyler Farmers Market is the go to place for homegrown fruits and vegetables.  If it’s grown in East Texas, you will find it from one of the local farmers at the Tyler Farmers Market.  Most farmers will sell you any size container. You may purchase small quantities or if you ask, most farmers will sell wholesale lots in larger quantities.  Regardless, you will meet a smiling face and some very resilient hard working farmers whom are dedicated to providing you the best that East Texas has to offer.

Children ages 0-2. Infant story time! We welcome parents to come with their babies and listen to songs, nursery rhymes, and stories geared toward their age. The children may not yet be of speaking or walking age, but physical interaction is extremely important in the early stages of child development. The infant story time also allows for parents to start off their child’s habits right by coming to the Library each week. Due to young attention spans, this story time will last about 15 minutes.

Tutoring Tuesdays – Tuesday from 3 – 5 p.m.
If your child, 5-13 years old, is struggling with their homework or understanding what they are doing in class, simply register them for Tutoring Tuesdays, and our qualified librarians will help!
Space is limited, so children must pre-register at the Children’s Desk prior to the tutoring session.
Due to time constraints, we will only be able to assist up to 10 students each Tuesday.
Please bring your child’s homework, along with any detailed instructions from their teacher(s).

Early Learning Journeys Story Time – Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Suggested for children ages 3-5. Young children will enjoy singing along and interacting with Library staff while building their educational foundation! Story time opens with a time of singing beloved childhood songs and nursery rhymes, followed by a newly-published book being read aloud. Children will then enjoy activities and crafts geared towards helping them to imagine, create, and grow! This story time lasts about 30 minutes.

Discovery Kids Story Time – Wednesday at 4 p.m.
After a long day at school, Discovery Kids is a time for children of all ages at the Broughton Recreation Center to gather around and hear a newly-published, popular chapter book read aloud while enjoying a small after-school snack. Afterward, time is set aside for the children to share their various thoughts and ideas regarding the book. The time frame for the this story time is about 40 minutes.

LEGOs @ The Library – Saturday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
A children’s book is read aloud, then children build their creations with a new theme each time while a movie is being played. Children of all ages are welcome to build! Larger Duplo bricks are provided for toddlers. At the end of each session, everyone’s creations are put in the Children’s Department’s display case until the next LEGOs @ the Library. Feel free to bring your friends and family by to show them what you built! This come-and-go event requires no registration, and you don’t even have to bring your own bricks. We have plenty to share, so just show up in the Children’s Department on Saturday morning!

Playing to Grow – Monday 5-6 p.m. Ages Birth to 3 years.  Join Mrs. Pam for this time to play and discover how play helps with learning and reading readiness. Children birth to age 3 with their parent (s).

Playing to Grow – Tuesday 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Ages Birth to 3 years.  Join Mrs. Pam for this time to play and discover how play helps with learning and reading readiness. Children birth to age 3 with their parent (s).

After School Programs – Tuesday 4 – 4:30 p.m. Two programs for children.  One program is for those children in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.  The other program is for children in Middle and High School (6th grade and up). Both programs have different activities weekly. Parents must remain on premises or make arrangements for their child’s supervision.  When the programs are over, an adult must be available to pick up the child; or, if there is a problem in the program, an adult must be available to help address the issue.

Toddler Story Time – Wednesday 10:15 – 10:45 a.m. Ages 18 months to 3 years.

Preschool Story Time – Wednesday 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.

Nacogdoches Public Library | 1112 North St., Nacogdoches, TX

Story Time – Wednesday 10 a.m. Ages: 12 years and younger. Introduce your child to the richness of literature through stories, songs, crafts and activities. Story time helps instill a lifelong love of reading, and it is informative and engaging for parents as well.
Reading Buddies – Wednesday 4 – 5 p.m. Children in grades 1-12. Volunteers and library staff are available to help your children practice their reading aloud skills. Buddies sit with the parent/caregiver and the child to help the child with pronunciation and comprehension. 

STEAM 4 Kids: Lights! Camera! Action! – Thursday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. STEAM 4 Kids will be devoted to the art of filmmaking. We will investigate types of cameras, types of videos, enhancing videos through lighting and sound, and how to edit and share our videos. Each program will have a different lesson so children can participate as they are able. Registration: Free. Please register by the day before the event.
