Throughout 2018, East Texas Moms Blog will be spotlighting one local nonprofit each month. Our goal is to bring awareness to our readers with nonprofit organizations that are making an impact in East Texas through their connection and work in the community.
CASA for Kids of East Texas
The mission of CASA for Kids of East Texas is to support abused and neglected children in Smith, Van Zandt and Wood Counties by providing court appointed trained community volunteers who advocate for loving, safe and permanent outcomes.
We serve as the “voice” of abused and neglected children in these East Texas Counties. We are appointed by the court to be their “eyes and ears” and serve in the official capacity of the child’s guardian ad litem. That means we build a relationship with the children, visit them in their temporary placements, assess their needs (shelter, food, clothing, education, mental health, developmental progress, trauma recovery, interactions with others, etc.) and represent those needs to the court. We also report on progress on court ordered services and the child’s progression. We work with the child’s team: CPS caseworkers, attorneys, health care and mental care providers, caregivers and families to help them recover, progress and find permanent, safe and loving homes.
There are a multitude of ways to support CASA for Kids of East Texas in addition to our volunteer opportunities. We accept donations of new toys, books, backpacks, school supplies, hygiene items. Tax deductible donations are accepted at the office at 3728 Southpark Drive, Tyler Texas 75703 or online. Donations can be one-time or recurring. Honorariums and memorials are accepted as well as donations in honor of a birthday or other special celebration. Cards are sent to the honoree with an acknowledgment sent to the donor. Visit our on-line donation page for more information. Follow us on FaceBook . We frequently post community events where our business friends such as area restaurants offer ways to easily support CASA as well.
We are also currently recruiting teams and “virtual teams” of community individuals who will reach out to their circle of family and friends during our annual “Caught Doing Good for Kids” event in September. Attached is a flyer on this fun event. This will be out 3rd year and the participating teams have had a blast. “Teams” can come to the office that day or participate “virtually.” Contact us if you are interested in more information.
We are located in Tyler with satellite offices in Canton and Mineola. Volunteer advocates visit the child at their convenience at the child’s placement, school or other location. Volunteers can take children on outings such as the park, McDonald’s, zoo, etc.
We would love to share more information with you about ways that you can be a part of what we do at CASA for Kids of East Texas!
