Every year we pick our girls up from Sky Ranch Camp in Van, TX and every year, I turn to my husband, with tears in my eyes and express to him how envious I am that my girls get to have so much fun in one week while also growing in their faith. This desire and emotion all comes from a 1/2 hour End of Show on Pick-up day and the constant references to Sky Ranch in the year that follows. It’s crazy experiencing the energy in the room from these kids and staffers and the lasting imprint that one week of camp in the summer makes on our kids.
It’s a place truly like none other.
Back in January, while having a conversation about Sky Ranch with several members on their team, I shared with them “said envy” and that conversation led into a discussion about Family Camp with Sky Ranch. I had heard about it through our time with Sky Ranch and had even seen emails and flyers after we attended Parent/Child Weekends with both of our girls. However, it never really dawned on me that this would be that camp experience that my family could have together. It didn’t take much convincing, but I listened as we talked about what the week looked like, what our experience would/could be and what it would mean for my family of 4.
That was it….sign us up!
Fast forward to our session at Sky Ranch Horn Creek in Westcliffe, CO in June. As we arrived, we were all a bit nervous. None of us really knew what to expect or how we would feel. Would it be just like Summer Camp, would we meet new friends, could we make it a whole week in our room without killing each other (insert a big sigh of relief here…we not only didn’t kill each other, we bonded in incredible ways!), would the altitude be too much, would we enjoy the activities and theme nights? In true Sky Ranch fashion, we were greeted with excitement and plenty of direction as to what the week would hold. We had landed ourselves in a week of unplugging, intentional family time, silly and fun theme nights, on and off campus adventure and purposeful time with our counselor (Shout out to Amanda D., We love you!) and other families. You could see that every detail had been thought out for the purpose of growing us closer as a family and growing us in our faith, all while having an unbelievably fun time in the beautiful mountains of Colorado.
My absolute favorite part of the entire week was the Family Blessing. We were given directions at the beginning of the week to be thinking about our Family Blessing time that would happen at the end of the week. We were challenged as parents and spouses to be thinking of specific words to speak to our children and to our spouse during this time. These were words that would breathe life into one another and would spur each other on to recognizing our value and significance in this life. The Bills are a pretty emotional family, but these emotions, these tears, they were from a place of deep gratitude and appreciation for one another and full recognition that we were created with great purpose and on purpose. As I sit here typing after just 2 short weeks, I still get tears in my eyes and have a feeling in my heart of pure joy and satisfaction. We, as a family, needed the pause, the unplugging and the nudge to stop and look each other in the eyes and see how big our blessings truly are in each other.
Our week at Sky Ranch Horn Creek will not soon be forgotten. We made some incredible memories that were so intentional in the present and had an eternal impact. It’s pretty safe to say, we are anticipating our return next year!
