This month summer is winding down and school is starting for many kids across East Texas. Use our blog post, 99 Things To Do This Summer to squeeze every last drop of fun out of your summer!  As you get back into the groove of the school year, look to East Texas Moms Blog for help.  Our archives are full of posts relating to many topics, including school and can be found with a quick search! 

There is always something going on in East Texas and we want to keep you in the know! Events in this guide are organized by date as well as category to help you find what you are interested in quickly. If you know of any fun family activities, please take a minute to add it to our Community Events Calendar here or let us know in the comments. We will update this guide with new additions as we receive them. Thank you!

August 2:  Story Time at Nacogdoches Public Library | 10 a.m. 1112 North St., Nacogdoches, TX  Ages: 12 years and younger. Introduce your child to the richness of literature through stories, songs, crafts and activities. Story time helps instill a lifelong love of reading, and it is informative and engaging for parents as well. Free.

August 2:  Toddler Time at Tyler Public Library | 10:30 a.m.  201 South College Avenue, Tyler, TX. Stories and songs for children under 3 years old and their families. Free. 

August 3-5: Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens | 6 – 10 p.m. Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens 680 Anderson Co Rd 456, Palestine, TX.  If you’re looking for something fun, fabulous and tasty to do this summer how about a Dinner and Movie Experience under the stars at beautiful Elmwood Gardens. August 3-5: “Legally Blonde the Musical” | 7:00 p.m. Tyler Civic Theater, 400 Rose Park Drive, Tyler, TX 75702 (Next to Tyler Rose Garden Center).  $25

August 3-6: First Monday Trade Days | “Sun-Up Til Sundown, Rain or Shine” – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas is the oldest, largest, continually operating flea market in the United States.  This popular flea market is open one weekend a month, attracts upwards of 100,000 shoppers, and provides spaces for 6,000 vendors located on hundreds of acres. It has become known by shoppers from all across Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma as THE place to buy home decor, furnishings, antiques, clothing, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and collectibles. And it is a favorite of vendors, dealers, craftsmen and artists alike as the perfect venue to market their wares.

August 4-5: “James and the Giant Peach” | 7:30 p.m.  Texas Theatre – Palestine Community Theatre, 213 W Crawford St, Palestine, TX 75801.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students ages 4-18 and are available online at our website at Ticket Info. or at our local ticket vendors (Palestine Chamber of Commerce, Palestine Visitors Center, Blake Furniture, and Discount Pools) one month prior to the show. “James and the Giant Peach” is a full-length musical based on the book of the same name by Roald Dahl. $10-$15.

August 4-5:  Jefferson Flea Market | 8:00am to 5:00pm  Located at 213 W. Broadway Street, Jefferson, Texas 75657.  The Jefferson Flea Market is evolving into one of the better Flea Markets in East Texas. Since opening over a year ago, the Jefferson Flea Market is growing, with an increase in both the number of visitors and vendors. Open year round on Friday and Saturday the First and Third weekend of every month and occasionally  on Sunday when there is a holiday or special events on the following Monday.  

August 4-6:  Repeats are Neat Consignment Sale | 7:15 – 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday  Score some back-to-school deals with Repeats are Neat’s upcoming fall consignment sale, at the Longview Fairgrounds, Exhibit Building (1123 Jaycee Drive).  The focus of the sale is children’s items such as baby clothing and gear, boys and girls clothing (Newborn thru Junior sizes), games, toys, books and accessories; “grown up” furniture such as bedroom sets, desks, coffee tables and more are a growing area of the sale as well. Free.

August 5: Walking with Dinosaurs in Crockett10:00 am – 1:00 pm Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce 1100 Edmiston Dr, Crockett, TX, This is a children’s event. A movie, lunch and water fun will be a part of the activities. HEB will serve lunch and HEBuddy will be around for photos. Admission $5 ages 6 and up. 3 and under free!
 
August 5:  Classic Movie in the Park: That Touch of Mink7:30 pm – 9:00 p.m. Reagan Park 400 S Micheaux St., Palestine, TX.  This months feature is That Touch of Mink – 1962 staring Cary Grant, Doris Day and Gig Young. Come and enjoy a free family movie night. Movie begins at dark in Reagan Park. (Park Ave. & Crockett Rd.) Don’t forget your blankets or chairs. Free.

August 6: Beauty and the Beast inspired Tea Party2 – 4 p.m. Howard House Museum 1011 N Perry St., Palestine, TX. Decorate your tea cup, learn how to brew the perfect cup of tea, hear the story of Beauty and the Beast with special guest Belle, paper dolls and more. Tickets are $10.00 and all proceeds will go towards the 2018 Dogwood Children’s Literacy and Art Festival author visit with Jim Arnosky. $10

August 7-11: Discovery Science Place Make It Move Camp | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Campers in our last camp of the season will get to fly, drive, and rocket creations all around their classrooms. Campers will learn about what causes motion, the basic physics involved, and how we discuss forces and motion in the science classroom. August 8:  Breastfeeding Mothers Support Group10 – 11:30 a.m. Learn helpful approaches to breastfeeding from other mothers and a certified lactation consultant.  Longview Regional Medical Center LRMC 709 BUILDING, 3RD FLOOR CARDIAC CLASSROOM. August 10: Pooches on the Patio5 – 8 p.mAndy’s Frozen Custard 6106 S Broadway Ave., Tyler, TX.  Nothing like the great outdoors with your dog and friends. Join us on the patio at Andy’s for delicious frozen custard, fellowship and fun. Bring your furry friends and enjoy a great evening. A portion of the proceeds benefit the SPCA of East Texas.

August 10-12: 2017 Fall (All Season) Just Between Friends East Texas 5 – 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday East Texas State Fairgrounds, 2112 W Front St., Tyler, TX.  Come join us for our twice a year East Texas/Tyler HUGE Children’s and Maternity Sale Event! You can find just about anything to raise a child with from infant up to juniors. Great place to shop as well as sell your items! August 12: Main “Sweet” Treats and Beats | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Downtown Nacogdoches, TX. Shoppers will taste desserts made by merchants and choose winners. This event is similar to Nacogdoches’ Wassail Fest, but with yummy sweets instead! Free. 

August 12: Ranch of Dreams Tour | 10:30 a.m. Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, 12526 CR 3806, Murchison, TX 75778.  The Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch is a world-renowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas that was founded in 1979 by author and animal advocate Cleveland Amory. The sanctuary is not a zoo but is now open to the public 1-2 times per month for small, prescheduled, guided tours to respect the peace and privacy of the animals. August 12: Tyler Cattle Barons Gala | 7 p.m. (general admission) Benefitting the American Cancer Society. Theme: Legends of the Call.  Headlner: Trace Adkins.  At the Brunson Equestrian Center at Texas Rose Horse Park, 14078 State Highway 110N, Tyler, Texas.  $200 general admission tickets

August 12-13: Longview Jaycees Trade Days | 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Longview Jaycees Trade Days will be held at the Longview Exhibit Building. Doors are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Vendors of all kinds come to buy, sell, trade and swap. Admission and parking are free. Longview Jaycees Trade Days is held the second weekend of every month, with the exception of September. For further information, please call the Longview Jaycees at 903-753-4478. No Admission Fee.

August 17:  62nd Anniversary Celebration | Noon – 6 p.m. Natural Grocers 4820 S Broadway, Tyler, TX. We’re 62 and we want to celebrate with YOU! Join us on Thursday, for one fabulous, 50’s-inspired birthday bash! We’ll have fantastic giveaways, great prizes, including a grand prize Alaskan cruise for two, and a chance to sample our Chocolate Powerhouse Pudding and enjoy an Ice Cream social. August 17: Plant Propagation – East Texas Arboretum | 5:30 p.m. 1601 Patterson Rd., Athens, Texas.  Learn about several of the 16 most prominent propagation methods. This hands-on workshop will provide you with cuttings, seeds, and much more. Taught by Jeanne Brown of Holder Hill Farms in Athens and Ted and Judy Haldeman. Cost: $15

Each year we develop relationships and celebrate with our community family with ; live music, snacks, games and back to school gifts (Backpacks, zip binders, shoe gift cards, supplies).  This is a free event and open to the public. Supply Distribution will be first come, first serve. Free.

August 3: 2017 School Is Cool | 4:30-7:30 p.m.  The fourth annual School is Cool back-to-school celebration will offer Tyler and Smith County families a host of resources to prepare for the new school year.  This event for prekindergarten through 12th grade students and parents will be at Harvey Convention Center and Tyler Rose Garden Center.  FREE, but students must be present to get backpack tickets – no exceptions.

August 3: Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Back to School Fair | 4-7 p.m.  The fair will be inside John Alexander Gymnasium, located on 811 Farnsworth. Parents and children learn about health and after school activities. Jacksonville students receive a backpack with grade appropriate school supplies. To receive a backpack, student must have completed required JISD online registration AND student MUST be present. FREE

August 5: Junior League Longview School Supply Train | 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.  (until supplies last)  The ROC First Baptist Church 212 E South St., Longview, TX 75601

Services:  A grade-appropriate backpack filled with school supplies. 1 uniform shirt. 1 pair of shoes. Free haircuts. Vision screening.

What to Bring:  ID for parent (driver’s license or government-issued ID). Proof of school enrollment for each child (report card of schedule). Proof of family’s income (current pay stub, benefit letter, Medicaid card)

August 11-13:  Texas Sales Tax Holiday/ Tax Free Weekend | As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.  Subject to the criteria explained on the state’s website, all sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, or by telephone or mail. Shoppers can use layaway plans to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

August 12:  School Supply Drive | 9 a.m. – Noon  Bethel Baptist Church, next to the Chapel Hill High School, will provide school supplies for 200 children.  Backpacks and supplies are for children Kindergarten through 8th grade.  Please join us and let us help your child be successful this school year! Free.

Jefferson Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  Every Saturday in downtown Jefferson in front of the First National Bank you can get fresh produce.  For more information you can call 903-665-2421. 

Lindale Farmers Market | 8:00 a.m.  This covered open-air venue provides farmers a place to showcase their seasonal and bountiful crops and allows the citizens of Lindale a place to purchase home-grown local produce, grass-fed beef and poultry, free range eggs, and homemade arts and crafts. Homemade breads, pies, jellies, jams are also sold at the market.

The Historic Longview Farmers Market | 7:30-11:30 a.m.  The Saturday Market is located at the corner of High and Cotton Streets, on the site of the former Kelly Plow Works.  The Historic Longview Farmers Market, a project of Preservation Longview, provides local residents and visitors the opportunity to buy locally grown produce directly from the farmers as well as other local farm and specialty products–no products in the market are purchased wholesale and resold.

Nacogdoches Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  The Market is located at the old “hitch lot” in historic downtown Nacogdoches, at 107 Pearl Street.

Tyler Farmers Market | 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Established in 1983, Tyler Farmers Market is the go to place for homegrown fruits and vegetables.  If it’s grown in East Texas, you will find it from one of the local farmers at the Tyler Farmers Market.  Most farmers will sell you any size container. You may purchase small quantities or if you ask, most farmers will sell wholesale lots in larger quantities.  Regardless, you will meet a smiling face and some very resilient hard working farmers whom are dedicated to providing you the best that East Texas has to offer.
