This month is full of fairs, farmer’s markets, festivals and football! And we are definitely gearing up for fall in East Texas.  As you are settling into the school year and ready for fall fun, make sure to check your local high school’s football schedule!  Also, look to East Texas Moms Blog for help, because our archives are full of posts relating to many topics that can be found with a quick search. 

There is always something going on in East Texas and we want to keep you in the know! Events in this guide are organized by date as well as category to help you find what you are interested in quickly. If you know of any fun family activities, please take a minute to add it to our Community Events Calendar here or let us know in the comments. We will update this guide with new additions as we receive them. August 31 – September 3: First Monday Trade Days | “Sun-Up Til Sundown, Rain or Shine” – First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas is the oldest, largest, continually operating flea market in the United States.  This popular flea market is open one weekend a month, attracts upwards of 100,000 shoppers, and provides spaces for 6,000 vendors located on hundreds of acres. It has become known by shoppers from all across Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma as THE place to buy home decor, furnishings, antiques, clothing, crafts, jewelry, gifts, and collectibles. And it is a favorite of vendors, dealers, craftsmen and artists alike as the perfect venue to market their wares.

September 1: Sharon Shrine Circus 2017 | 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Maude Cobb Convention Center 100 Grand Blvd., Longview, TX.  With three rings of affordable family fun, “The Shrine Circus” will thrill fans of all ages. Come see the death-defying aerial acts, animal attractions including tigers and elephants. In addition to the performing acts, kids will have the unique opportunity to ride and pet different types of animals.  Price: $10.00 to $30.00 Adults $18 Children $14 Family Packs $30
 
September 1: Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens “Middle School” S’mores Night| 6 – 10 p.m. Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens 680 Anderson Co Rd 456, Palestine, TX.  If you’re looking for something fun, fabulous and tasty to do this summer how about a Dinner and Movie Experience under the stars at beautiful Elmwood Gardens. September 1-2:  Jefferson Flea Market | 8:00am to 5:00pm  Located at 213 W. Broadway Street, Jefferson, Texas 75657.  The Jefferson Flea Market is evolving into one of the better Flea Markets in East Texas. Since opening over a year ago, the Jefferson Flea Market is growing, with an increase in both the number of visitors and vendors. Open year round on Friday and Saturday the First and Third weekend of every month and occasionally  on Sunday when there is a holiday or special events on the following Monday.  
 
September 2: Lego Block Party at the Tyler Public Library | 2 -4 p.m.  Lego Block Party is an open, creative play time with LEGO and DUPLO blocks. We provide the blocks, you provide the imagination! Free.

September 5: Gymnastics at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum | 4 -6 p.m. 2501 Hwy 24, Commerce, TX. $6.

September 8: Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens “Storks” Fireworks after the movie| 6 – 10 p.m. Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens 680 Anderson Co Rd 456, Palestine, TX.  If you’re looking for something fun, fabulous and tasty to do this summer how about a Dinner and Movie Experience under the stars at beautiful Elmwood Gardens. September 8-17: Four States Fair and Rodeo |  3700 East 50th Street, Texarkana, AR 71854 The 73rd Annual Four States Fair & Rodeo will open on September 8th at 4PM. The fair opens weekdays at 4PM, Saturdays at Noon and Sunday’s at 1PM. Fair Admission is $7 Adults and $5 Children 6-12 years old. 5 and under are free! Join us for ten days of food, fun and free ice cream available at the Ag Learning Center. Entertainment nightly on the Outdoor Stage, Livestock Shows, and arts and exhibits open daily.  $ 7 Adults, $5 Children

September 9:  Rose City Kids Triathlon | Youth Race Ages 6-13  Teamed with the Rose City Sprint Triathlon, our Rose City Kids Triathlon sets the scene for the perfect family-friendly healthy living experience. This premier event will offer young athletes of all levels the unique opportunity to enjoy the excitement of competition without the anxiety that comes with being a novice. All finishing participants will be awarded an esteemed medal. Parents, family, and friends are invited to cheer on the racers while enjoying the beautiful lake venue nestled among the piney woods.  Check website for registration.

 

 

September 10:  Rose City Triathlon | Proceeds benefit Smith County Volunteer Fireman’s Association  CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System has partnered with East Texas Triathletes to present the Rose City Triathlon. The 10th annual sprint triathlon (650 meter open water swim, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run) will take place at a specially designed Lake Tyler course.  Visit website for registration.

September 12:  Bling-O at the Cascades | 6:30 p.m.  Bling-O, a ladies-night-out of Bingo played for designer purses, is a fun night of games, food, and fellowship. The event will include a silent auction as well as many additional games and a chance drawing. The 2016 event was amazing with over 550 people in attendance and lots of fun games! Come enjoy the evening and see if you can take home a little bling from our Bling-O Event. Check their website for ticket information.

September 13-16: Pittsburg Pioneer Days | 45th Annual Pioneer Days Festival in Pittsburg, Texas. Join us the 3rd weekend in September for carnival midway, parade, 5k run, livestock show, wine fest, bbq cook-off, live music, queens pageant and more!

Boys & Girls Clubs across the country and around the world celebrates this day created as a day to foster relationships between adults and children. September 16:  Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival is held annually on the third weekend of September in downtown Galdewater.

September 16:  Family Movie Matinee at the Tyler Public Library | 10:30 a.m. “Boss Baby” in the Library auditorium. Free.

September 17:  Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Gladewater Arts and Crafts Festival is held annually on the third weekend of September in downtown Galdewater.

September 17: Yo-Yo Ma at the Cowan Center | 7 – 9 p.m. The UT Tyler Cowan Center and East Texas Symphony Orchestra join together to present acclaimed cellist YO-YO MA in concert with the ETSO. Mr. Ma will perform Dvořák’s dramatic Cello Concerto in B Minor. The evening will also include Dvořák’s Humoresque and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1.  Tickets $37.00 to $147.00.

September 22-23: Bois d’Arc Bash | 10 a.m. – 10 p.m.  The 32nd Annual Bois d’Arc Bash will be held on September 22 & 23, 2017, downtown on the square in Commerce.  The Bash Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, September 22, at Sand Hills Country Club. On Friday night, we will have music and the Commerce Leadership BBQ sack supper, along with a few vendors. The Bash kicks off on Saturday morning with a 5K Run/Walk. The Bash Parade begins at 10 a.m. and comes down Park Street and through the square, then on Washington back to the starting point. After the parade, our vendor booths will be open for business! We have around 125 vendors, including our food vendors. Music will begin around 11 a.m. and will continue through the afternoon and the evening. There is a wine tasting in the late afternoon/early evening. This year our Saturday night headliner will be Zane Williams. The Aglaia Culture Club sponsors a Duck Race on Saturday. Tickets are available from club members. The carnival will be open in Farmers Market on Friday night and all day Saturday. We are looking forward to a great time at the Bash this year! 

September 23:  Tyler Gold Run | 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. At Rose Rudman Park in Tyler. Chip-timed 5K race and Family Fun Run benefitting Gold Network of East Texas, to support families impacted by Childhood Cancer. See website for race fees.
 
September 23: East Texas Walk to End Alzheimer’s 8 – 11:30 a.m. At Heritage Plaza in downtown Longview. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and 5k Walk at 9:00 a.m. Register your team online at act.alz.org/easttexas. No cost to walk but donations are encouraged to continue the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease that affects hundreds of families in East Texas. 
 
September 23:  Ruffles and Rust Expo | 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The Ruffles and Rust Expo will take place at the Longview Exhibit Building on Saturday, April 1, 2017, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. According to event organizers, Ricky and Sherry Brinlee, they will be “bringing you the most fun you can have at a ONE day shopping event! If it is Rusty, Sparkly, Funky, Yummy and One-of-a-Kind, you will find it at our show! Remember, it’s more than shopping – it’s an event!” Admission is $5 per person, 12 yrs. and under are free.
 
September 23: Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival| 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Athens, Texas is the Official Home of the Hamburger. Uncle Fletch Davis invented the Hamburger and shared his invention at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The Texas Legislature has proclaimed Athens as the Official Home of the Hamburger. Over the years, Athens has hosted an Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival to the delight of folks locally and from around the World. 
 
September 23: Shake Rattle and Roll!7:30 – 10:00 p.m.  Cherokee Civic Theatre 157 West 5th Street, Rusk, TX.  Back by popular demand! The magical music of the 50’s and 60’s is reborn when this all female show group from East Texas take the stage. Winners of the largest Doo Wop contest ever held in Las Vegas, these ladies are popular for their ability to keep the crowd entertained with their vocal harmonies, synchronized moves, hula hooping skills and comedy. $15.
 
September 20-24: Texas State Forest Festival | George H. Henderson, Jr Exposition Center, 1200 Ellen Trout Dr., Lufkin, Texas. The Angelina County Chamber of Commerce began the Texas State Forest Festival in 1938, which was held as an annual county fair event until 1953.

Children 3 & Under are FREE. You may leave the festival and come back that same day, but you MUST get your hand stamped before leaving.  Active service men and women, veterans, and first responders get into the festival free on Thursday night with Military ID, occupational ID, or in uniform.

September 24: Texas State Forest Festival | 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. George H. Henderson, Jr Exposition Center, 1200 Ellen Trout Dr., Lufkin, Texas. The Angelina County Chamber of Commerce began the Texas State Forest Festival in 1938, which was held as an annual county fair event until 1953. $6

September 26: Gymnastics at the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum | 4 -6 p.m. 2501 Hwy 24, Commerce, TX. $6.

September 27-30: Downtown Tyler Filmfestival | 7 – 11 p.m. A celebration of storytelling through film, the Downtown Tyler Film Festival has grown to be an international film festival comprised of short films from around the world. The daily pass for Wednesday through Friday is only $5; Saturday night’s “Best of the Fest,” which includes food and drinks at the post-party, is $10; the Producer’s all-access pass is available for only $20. Doors will open at 6 p.m. each night, with a pre-screening reception sponsored by Stella Artois.

September 29: Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens “Beauty and the Beast” Free bread pudding night. | 6 – 10 p.m. Sunset Cinema at Elmwood Gardens 680 Anderson Co Rd 456, Palestine, TX.  If you’re looking for something fun, fabulous and tasty to do this summer how about a Dinner and Movie Experience under the stars at beautiful Elmwood Gardens. September 30: Outdoor EXPO at TFFC | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center 5550 FM 2495, Athens, TX.  Learn a variety of outdoor skills and engage in activities such as fishing and kayaking. Participate in our free family fishing tournament and win great prizes!

September 22 – October 1:  East Texas State Fair | 2112 West Front Street, Tyler, Texas The East Texas State Fair is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes through the operation of an annual event promoting education, entertainment and the spirit of competition.

Children 3 & Under are FREE. You may leave the festival and come back that same day, but you MUST get your hand stamped before leaving.  Active service men and women, veterans, and first responders get into the festival free on Thursday night with Military ID, occupational ID, or in uniform.

  • On both Saturday’s, wristbands are valid from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. After 5:00 p.m. individual ride coupons can be purchased at the carnival ticket booths (vaild until close – 11:00 pm).

Athens, Texas Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon Saturdays beginning in May, at 212 N Palestine St, Athens, Texas.

Edom, Texas Grow It Forward Farm | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturdays at VZ County Road 4609, Edom, Texas. We are a small family farm located in Edom, Texas. Our goal is to bring our community & customers fresh, locally grown produce that is chemical free.

Jefferson Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  Every Saturday in downtown Jefferson in front of the First National Bank you can get fresh produce.  For more information you can call 903-665-2421. 

Lindale Farmers Market | 8:00 a.m.  This covered open-air venue provides farmers a place to showcase their seasonal and bountiful crops and allows the citizens of Lindale a place to purchase home-grown local produce, grass-fed beef and poultry, free range eggs, and homemade arts and crafts. Homemade breads, pies, jellies, jams are also sold at the market.

The Historic Longview Farmers Market | 7:30-11:30 a.m.  The Saturday Market is located at the corner of High and Cotton Streets, on the site of the former Kelly Plow Works.  The Historic Longview Farmers Market, a project of Preservation Longview, provides local residents and visitors the opportunity to buy locally grown produce directly from the farmers as well as other local farm and specialty products–no products in the market are purchased wholesale and resold.

Mineola Farmers Market | 8 – 11 a.m.  Saturdays at The Pavilion @ 101 Front Street (west of the train depot).

Nacogdoches Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon  The Market is located at the old “hitch lot” in historic downtown Nacogdoches, at 107 Pearl Street.

Rose City Farmers Market | 8 a.m. – Noon Open Saturdays (beginning in April), at 7212 Old Jacksonville Hwy.We are Tyler’s truly local farmers market. Since our humble beginnings we have been a producer’s only market so you can rest assured everything on our tables was produced by the person selling it.  A family- and dog-friendly community gathering place, Rose City Farmers Market is THE place to be! Produce, herbs, wood oven breads, pastries and granola, jams, pickles, locally roasted coffee, cheese, artists and artisans, live music, and yoga on the terrace 8:30-9:30. 

Rusk County Farmers Market | 7 a.m. – Sold Out! Every Tuesday and Saturday. The farmers’ market is located next to the Henderson Activities Center parking lot on Fair Park and South High in Henderson, Texas.

Tyler Farmers Market | 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday beginning in May. Located at 4850 Old Bullard Rd in Tyler, Texas,  in the Broadway Square Mall parking lot on the Sears end of the mall. Established in 1983, Tyler Farmers Market is the go to place for homegrown fruits and vegetables.  If it’s grown in East Texas, you will find it from one of the local farmers at the Tyler Farmers Market.  Most farmers will sell you any size container. You may purchase small quantities or if you ask, most farmers will sell wholesale lots in larger quantities.  Regardless, you will meet a smiling face and some very resilient hard working farmers whom are dedicated to providing you the best that East Texas has to offer.

Babygarten Story Time – Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
Children ages 0-2. Infant story time! We welcome parents to come with their babies and listen to songs, nursery rhymes, and stories geared toward their age. The children may not yet be of speaking or walking age, but physical interaction is extremely important in the early stages of child development. The infant story time also allows for parents to start off their child’s habits right by coming to the Library each week. Due to young attention spans, this story time will last about 15 minutes.
 
Tutoring Tuesdays – Tuesday from 3 – 5 p.m.
If your child, 5-13 years old, is struggling with their homework or understanding what they are doing in class, simply register them for Tutoring Tuesdays, and our qualified librarians will help! 
Space is limited, so children must pre-register at the Children’s Desk prior to the tutoring session. 
Due to time constraints, we will only be able to assist up to 10 students each Tuesday. 
Please bring your child’s homework, along with any detailed instructions from their teacher(s).

Early Learning Journeys Story Time – Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Suggested for children ages 3-5. Young children will enjoy singing along and interacting with Library staff while building their educational foundation! Story time opens with a time of singing beloved childhood songs and nursery rhymes, followed by a newly-published book being read aloud. Children will then enjoy activities and crafts geared towards helping them to imagine, create, and grow! This story time lasts about 30 minutes.
 
Discovery Kids Story Time – Wednesday at 4 p.m.
After a long day at school, Discovery Kids is a time for children of all ages at the Broughton Recreation Center to gather around and hear a newly-published, popular chapter book read aloud while enjoying a small after-school snack. Afterward, time is set aside for the children to share their various thoughts and ideas regarding the book. The time frame for the this story time is about 40 minutes.
 
LEGOs @ The Library – Saturday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
A children’s book is read aloud, then children build their creations with a new theme each time while a movie is being played. Children of all ages are welcome to build! Larger Duplo bricks are provided for toddlers. At the end of each session, everyone’s creations are put in the Children’s Department’s display case until the next LEGOs @ the Library. Feel free to bring your friends and family by to show them what you built! This come-and-go event requires no registration, and you don’t even have to bring your own bricks. We have plenty to share, so just show up in the Children’s Department on Saturday morning!

Story Time – Wednesday 10 a.m. Ages: 12 years and younger. Introduce your child to the richness of literature through stories, songs, crafts and activities. Story time helps instill a lifelong love of reading, and it is informative and engaging for parents as well. 

Reading Buddies – Wednesday 4 – 5 p.m. Children in grades 1-12. Volunteers and library staff are available to help your children practice their reading aloud skills. Buddies sit with the parent/caregiver and the child to help the child with pronunciation and comprehension. 

STEAM 4 Kids: Lights! Camera! Action! – Thursday 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. STEAM 4 Kids will be devoted to the art of filmmaking. We will investigate types of cameras, types of videos, enhancing videos through lighting and sound, and how to edit and share our videos. Each program will have a different lesson so children can participate as they are able. Registration: Free. Please register by the day before the event.
